Spitzkoppe is a cluster of granite peaks that rises abruptly from the flat gravel plains between Windhoek and the coast. Often called the Matterhorn of Namibia, the main peak and the smooth domes around it glow orange at sunrise and sunset, and the famous rock arch frames the light like a window.
Among the boulders are San rock paintings, including the site known as Bushman's Paradise, and short walks lead to hidden hollows and wide views across the Erongo plains. The area is looked after by the local community, and simple campsites are tucked in between the rocks.
It is a place to slow down: scramble over the granite, photograph the arch, and stay for the night sky, which is exceptionally dark this far from any town. Spitzkoppe fits easily into a camping expedition or a private route between Windhoek, Swakopmund and Damaraland.

When to go
April to October for cooler days and clear skies; summer afternoons are very hot.
Getting there
About 3 to 3.5 hours north-west of Windhoek, or roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Swakopmund (approximate times), with the last stretch on gravel roads.
TransfersTravel tips
- Granite gets very hot by midday: walk early or late and carry water.
- Wear shoes with good grip for the smooth rock.
- Never touch the rock paintings; a guide helps you find and protect them.
- Bring a warm layer for the evening, as desert nights cool down quickly.
