Rugged red-rock country in the north-west: Twyfelfontein's ancient rock engravings, desert-adapted elephants and wide, empty valleys.
Damaraland is Namibia at its most elemental: burnt red rock, flat-topped mountains, dry riverbeds lined with ana trees and a silence that goes on for miles. It is one of the few places where desert-adapted elephants still roam freely outside a national park, following the dry Huab and Aba-Huab rivers in search of water and shade.
At its heart lies Twyfelfontein, Namibia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, where San hunter-gatherers carved more than 2,500 engravings into the sandstone over thousands of years. Nearby, the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain show the region's volcanic past, and the Damara Living Museum shares traditional crafts, medicine and song.
On our routes Damaraland follows the Skeleton Coast: time for the rock art, a 4x4 tracking drive along the riverbeds to look for desert elephants, and nights at a lodge or campsite among the sandstone and granite hills.
