Remote mountain country in the far north-west: Himba villages, the Kunene River and the palm-lined Epupa Falls.
Kaokoland is one of the last true wilderness areas in southern Africa: rugged mountains, dry valleys and very few roads. It is home to semi-nomadic Himba communities, and in Opuwo, the small town that is the gateway to the region, Himba, Herero and Zemba cultures meet.
Our longest expedition drives north from Damaraland through the Joubert Pass to Opuwo and on to Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, the border with Angola. Baobabs and palms line the river, Nile crocodiles bask on the banks, and a respectful, guided visit to a Himba village explains the ancestral fire (okuruuo), the importance of cattle and the red otjize paste.
Travel here is slow and demanding, and deeply rewarding for travellers who want Namibia beyond the tarmac.
